A van of 10 or 12 m³ is not chosen the same way one books a utility vehicle for a move. The dimensions, threshold height, and payload capacity directly affect the feasibility of loading, transport stability, and the integrity of the motorcycle upon arrival. Threshold height and loading ramp: the criteria that rental companies do not highlight
Most rental comparison sites display the useful volume and the GVW. They almost always overlook the loading threshold height, which determines the angle of the ramp and thus the difficulty of loading.
A van with a floor height of more than 60 cm from the ground requires a long ramp to maintain a reasonable incline. Below 15% slope, the motorcycle can be loaded without risk of slipping or tipping backward. Beyond that, the weight of the trail or roadster resting on the rear wheel complicates the maneuver significantly.
We recommend prioritizing low-floor utility vehicles (like the Renault Master cab floor or the Fiat Ducato low chassis) or, if not available, demanding a ramp of at least two meters in length. Some agencies offer foldable aluminum ramps as an option, but their width is sometimes insufficient for a 180 mm rear tire. Checking this point before picking up the vehicle avoids dangerous improvisation in the parking lot.

GVW, B license, and the 1.3 ratio constraint: check before booking
The B license allows the driving of a vehicle whose GVW does not exceed 3.5 tons. When towing a motorcycle trailer, the combined weight of the towing vehicle + trailer must not exceed this limit, unless you have a BE license or a B96 training.
Since October 29, 2012, even trailers under 500 kg must be approved before being put into circulation. The actual weight of the loaded trailer must not exceed 1.3 times the actual weight of the towing vehicle.
In practical terms, a lightweight rental van weighing 1,800 kg empty can only tow a trailer loaded with a maximum of 2,340 kg. This leaves room for a single motorcycle, but not necessarily for two machines on a double deck.
The European Parliament adopted a reform of licenses in 2024 aimed at harmonizing access to trailer and heavy vehicle categories. Rental companies have not yet all integrated these changes into their general conditions. We advise checking the required license category at the time of booking, not at the counter on the day.
Securing a motorcycle in a van: straps, anchor points, and method
Loading a motorcycle into a van is not just about rolling it up the ramp and closing the door. A faulty securing is the leading cause of damage during transport.
Essential securing equipment
- Four ratchet straps with a minimum capacity of 500 daN each, with soft ends or protected hooks to avoid scratching the fork tubes or frame.
- A workshop stand or a front wheel chock secured to the van’s floor, which blocks the wheel and prevents any longitudinal movement during braking.
- Foam or neoprene padding to place between the straps and painted or chrome parts (handlebars, tank, footpegs).
The method involves compressing the fork by about one-third of its travel by tightening the front straps downward. The two rear straps work in opposition, pulled towards the corners of the van. This triangulation prevents the motorcycle from pivoting laterally in turns.
Anchor points in the rental van
Not all rental vans have anchor rings on the floor. Recent models generally have four to six, but their placement varies. Before confirming the reservation, we recommend asking the agency for the exact location of the rings and their load capacity. Rings that are too close together prevent proper triangulation and make securing unstable.
Truck rental rates for motorcycle transport: the variables that affect the price
The rate displayed on an online comparison site rarely corresponds to the actual cost. Several additional charges can double the initial bill.
- Included mileage: most contracts provide a package (often limited). Each additional kilometer is charged extra, which adds up significantly on a journey of several hundred kilometers.
- Supplementary insurance: the standard deductible on a rental van is high. Taking out partial or full deductible buyback increases the daily rate but provides protection in case of an incident.
- Securing equipment: ramps, straps, and wheel chocks are not always included. Some rental companies charge extra for them, while others do not offer them at all.
- Duration: a one-way trip with return at a different agency costs significantly more than a round trip to the same starting point.
Comparing offers solely based on the gross daily price leads to unpleasant surprises. The total cost depends on mileage, the deductible, and included equipment.
Van, flatbed, or motorcycle trailer: which rental vehicle to choose
The enclosed van protects the motorcycle from the elements and theft during stops. In return, loading is more technical than with an open flatbed or a dedicated trailer.
The flatbed (like the Renault Master cab chassis) offers side and rear access, which simplifies the maneuver. The motorcycle remains exposed to splashes and prying eyes, which poses a problem in highway rest areas.
The motorcycle trailer hitched to a personal vehicle remains the most economical solution for short distances. However, it requires adhering to the 1.3 ratio and having an approved hitch on the towing vehicle. For long-distance travel with a heavy motorcycle (over 250 kg fully fueled), the low-floor rental van remains the safest compromise between accessibility, protection, and stability.
Thus, the choice of vehicle depends on the weight of the motorcycle, the distance to be traveled, and the available license. Before any booking, cross-referencing these three parameters with the technical specifications of the proposed vehicle remains the only reliable method to avoid refusal at the counter or risky transport.
